• Life changes quickly sometimes and over the past eight months a lot has changed. A marriage happened, a new puppy was introduced to the family and a martial arts studio was opened. With all of this new excitement happening some things get pushed back. One being the Prepare and Survive Blog. As many of you [...]

    Still here…
  • After any event we like to take a breather and relax a bit. Planning something take a lot of time and energy so rebooting is always necessary. During that break a lot happened, a puppy came into our home, a new martial art dojang opened and a wedding is right around the corner! So, you [...]

    What’s New
  • I was thinking this morning, “I wonder how many people are wasteful in their day to day activities?”. This question then brought me to the thought that the things that we are wasteful at now will end up hurting us when we need to conserve our resources. Many people take for granted that if they [...]

One of the easiest ways to get prepared is to get back to the basics. What do I mean by this? This means being able to still do your daily activities or household chores if the power went out for days. Do you currently rely on your powered kitchen gadgets to make your life faster and easier? If you do now is the time for a back-up system. Settlers used candle light, washboards, wood stoves for cooking and raised their own animals for mild and meat. Are you able to do the same? We are fortunate that many living in Portland and Oregon are getting back to the living off the land and being self reliant.

Most of us who live in the city won’t be able to adopt all these options but you can bring one or two into your life. Then find like-minded people who are skilled in other areas so you can come together in the event of a major disaster. This is the goal of Prepare + Survive Expo on April 14th at Buchan Hall at the Eliot Center. We can all learn and get prepared together, creating a stronger community.

We are very excited to have Portland Homesteading Supply Co. at the upcoming event on April 14th. They have everything you need to start urban homesteading. Whether you want to learn how to make your own cheese, can your own fruit and veggies, raise chickens for eggs or make beeswax candles, they have it!

Join us at the event and talk to them in person to learn how you can start urban homesteading and be more self reliant!
